First of all, congratulations on your new album "2am in L.A.". How does it feel to receive this great feedback from your fans?
It feels very good just because this is the first time that I've ever produced my own music, so this whole album all the way through - I wrote the lyrics, produced all the beats in my bedroom. This is the first time that I've done anything like that, and to see it go from my bedroom to topping the charts on iTunes is very fulfilling. It was the most proud I've ever been of myself, of my fans and of my music.
This album feels very personal, not only because you've created it by yourself, but also because of the topics and stories you wrote about. Were you worried to kind of bare your soul and show people a new side of you?
No, I think it's always important, as an artist, to be a 100% real all the time. In order to feel music in your heart and your soul you have to make it from your heart and your soul, no matter what you're going through or if it's hard to talk about it. It's actually a lot easier to write an sing about these things than to talk about them, so this is my kind of way of letting all of this pressure and all of these thoughts that are building in my head, it's my way of getting them out. It's like a therapy session for me to write these songs.
Was difficult to revisit some of the stories / emotions while writing these songs?
It was a little difficult, just the time period and some of the things I was going through were difficult, but writing about them made it a lot easier. Sometimes when I hear these songs, I'm kind of in a different place than I was a few months ago, so to hear some of these songs it takes me back to those days, earlier this year, where I was feeling a little bit down. So they definitely bring up some flashbacks and stuff like that, but writing the songs definitely helped me get through all of those emotional times.
Did this whole process change you as a person? Did it teach you new things about yourself?
Yeah, it definitely taught me that if you want something done correctly do it yourself, if you wanna go out and learn how to make beats and write your own songs you can put in a ten-thousand dollars of work and learn how to do it and practice it. This is the first time that I've ever made beats, so now I'm getting better, I'm practicing everyday. I just think that with a lot of practice and sitting on YouTube everyday for hours and hours you can learn anything and get good at anything.
The greatest thing about this story I think, besides the great music you've made, is the huge motivation that you're giving to everyone. In a moment where almost everything wasn't going your way, you decided to focus on your dreams and remind everyone of what you're made of. What or who was your support system during that time? What kept you going?
My supporting system is always my fans, they're always amazing, they're always there for me. They're obviously the one that I wanna make this music for, and I want them to love it and relate to it. I also have a great family and friends, who are always there for me. I'm very lucky to be surrounded by a lot of great people.
Why did you choose "Parties" to shoot first from the album?
We're going to be shooting a lot of videos, but I just thought that was a really cool song and I wanted to show everybody what a party that I got to looks like, and kind of put everybody in my shoes for a little bit. And we already have a bunch of other music videos ready to go, so I'm excited!
What was the shooting like? Tell me a little about the making of the video.
We shot it in L.A. with my actual friends, it was cool. I wanted everybody to stay still throughout the video while I walk around and sing, because it symbolises that I'm there at the party but my head isn't really there, I'm not really present.
"Palm Blvd" music video was also released recently. What can you tell us about it?
It's definitely one of my favorite songs in the album. The music video is very heartfelt. And also this is the first music video that I've ever directed and edited myself.
Your fans seem to like many songs from album. How many songs are you planning to shoot?
I'm trying to shoot as many as I can, I'll probably shoot another 2 or 3. I wanna shoot one for "Sleeping With Strangers", but we also have a lot of other stuff that I'm working on, I'm putting together am acoustic album, and then we have some remix kind of album, so there's gonna be a lot of new stuff, new music, new versions, and it's gonna be really cool.
Through your music videos, you've shown some acting skills. Did you ever think about branching into acting?
Yeah, one day. I'm not really passionate about acting the way I am about music that's for sure, but it's definitely something I'd love to explore one day as an artist and as a person. I'm always trying to try new things and push myself and get better at things. Once I've got into a place in the music industry where I'm very satisfied feel like I could take a little break I would love to try acting, definitely not now.
I will give you the titles of some songs from the album, and I want you to tell me what time do you listen to it?
Can't Help Myself?
Probably at a party, so maybe 10 O'clock, at night.
Halfway?
Probably around midnight, when I'm staying home and overthinking a little bit too much. Probably texting somebody and not getting the response that I want.
Parties?
Parties would be any time at night. That's the kind of song where I'm staying home and everybody else is out having fun, and I just decide to stay home and work on music. I'm always in my bedroom from 8:00 O'clock at night till 3:00 in the morning working on music, so anytime throughout that period I guess.
Sleeping With Strangers?
That's overnight. [laughs]
Palm Blvd? (Boulevard)
Anytime during the day, 12:00 O'clock in the afternoon, where I'm in L.A. but I'd rather be in Florida.
