"This song in particular is a little rough for me, but I like that about it. I think it’s good to be vulnerable sometimes." Aidan Alexander opens up to Glamoholic magazine about his new single, Lullaby, available HERE, upcoming Hulu show, his style and more!
"I RECORDED IT ONCE AND WAS LISTENING TO IT AND SUDDENLY JUST HATED IT. I THOUGHT THE VOCALS WERE ALL WRONG AND NOT EMOTIVE ENOUGH AND SO I WENT BACK IN AND REDID THEM ALL!"
Your new single “Lullaby” is available now. What was the inspiration behind it?
I wrote Lullaby more than a year ago. I just wanted to make something calm and melodic, like a lullaby, but also tell a story about someone I missed.
Your storytelling abilities are so unique. What’s your writing process like?
It’s always different! This song started as a little 10 second or so that I started humming and then recorded on my voice notes. I wrote the guitar for the chorus and brought it into the studio and we finished it!
Is it ever difficult for you to revisit some stories and write about them?
Typically, no. This song in particular is a little rough for me, but I like that about it. I think it’s good to be vulnerable sometimes. There’s also part of me that thinks the more you talk (technically, sing) about something the less it can hurt you.
You perform the song with so much emotion. What helps you get those emotions out while recording in the studio?
I recorded it once and was listening to it and suddenly just hated it. I thought the vocals were all wrong and not emotive enough and so I went back in and redid them all. I was really anal about it.
I feel like this is one of the songs that can create a “moment” on stage. Are you excited to perform it in front of an audience?
I think it’s gonna be a really cool experience. Part of me is nervous but I think it will be special to share that moment with the fans.
Are you planning to film a music video for “Lullaby”? How do you visualize it?
At the moment, not Lullaby. If so, I think when I hear the song, it reminds me of empty streets at midnight, still wet from the rain. So maybe outside late at night, walking home from something. I’ve done those late night, post-party walks, and they can be lonely.
What would you like your next chapter in music to look like? What types of music would you like to experiment with?
I definitely am looking forward to the future singles. I think they’re really fun, but have a lot of depth as well. I want the chapter to just be anthemic and relatable, but mostly just an escape for people.
You started acting at a young age. How did that prepare you to manage your career currently?
It definitely taught me to develop thick skin. You get told no so many times that you start to get better with rejection. I think it’s especially helped me on that front.
Are you working on any upcoming acting projects?
I am. I actually just wrapped production on a new Hulu show. It’s an amazing project, it’s really sexy and fun and I’m insanely excited to see it myself. We shot for a few months in Atlanta and I’ve never got to spend any time there, which was a plus.
What would be your dream role?
Definitely something in the Scream franchise. They’ve been my favorite movies since I was little so being able to run around a house screaming and evading a killer sounds insanely fun to me. I think the movies are so great and smart so that would have to be a dream.
Your style just keeps getting better and better! Does fashion help you give an extra aspect to the story you’re telling?
At times! Sometimes I can be very unintentional with the way I dress, and other times put a lot more thought into it. That’s what I like about fashion though, you can really do and wear what you want, as long as you feel good wearing it. I’m not sure if I’m the best, but I definitely try to watch what everyone around me does and copy them [laughs].
I can tell from your recent instagram posts that you’re in a great shape. How do you maintain a healthy lifestyle?
It’s really about eating! I try to eat healthy, and a lot of food, but that’s just me specifically. I’ve actually been terrible at working out lately so I’m not the best person to ask, but I try to just get in there like 3 times a week, even for just a little. I think everyone has to develop a routine based on what they want to change and what’s safe for their body.
Tell me a fun fact that people don’t know yet about you!
This is definitely not a “fun” fact, or even remotely interesting but I can pop my nose. I don’t know how or if that means it’s gonna fall off eventually but I really can. My friends think it’s disgusting.
Do you have any guilty pleasure?
I watch an insane amount of reality TV if I’m upset. I need the most mindless entertainment and to me, it’s that.
What’s your favorite dish / dessert?
I love Dutch apple pie. I don’t know why, I never had it growing up and don’t have any sentimental memories or anything, but one time at 2am I got one from the grocery store and ate the whole thing in my car. Since then it’s a problem, and it’s especially bad because I can’t find them anywhere in Los Angeles.
What makes you smile on a regular day?
My dog. He’s really so cute. I used to think dog owners were so annoying forcing photos of their dogs on everyone, but now that I have my dog I’m really that person. He always can cheer me up because he’s truly a menace. They have such a pure, innocent energy and it’s a nice break from people.
