LAUNCH THE SLIDESHOW >

I totally love your latest single “Hellboy!”… The energy of it, melodies, lyrics. Tell me more about the inspiration behind it!
“Hellboy” was truly inspired by me trying to reclaim my own self-confidence after the pandemic. I went from playing 118 shows in 2019, to not playing a single one in 2020. It felt like my entire center of gravity had been taken away from me. With “Hellboy,” I wanted to write something that channeled the persona I enter into when I’m on stage. I wouldn’t call it an alter-ego, but it is definitely a different version of myself. Everyone has an inner-Hellboy in them, they just have to unleash it.

What does it feel like to go in a completely different direction after your last 2 singles?
It might seem like a change in direction now, but when my EP Trophies comes out, I think it will all make sense. Every creative choice that I make is intentional, including this one. I wanted to show my fans the range of music that they will be getting on this upcoming body of work.

The music video for “Hellboy” seems really interesting as well! What’s the concept behind it? What did you want the visual aspect to add to the song?
I owe the entire music video to my dear friend Gilly Moya, who dances in Hellboy. He is brilliant and ultimately inspired the entire concept of the video. Our goal was to make something cinematic, and to show the world a side of me that they had perhaps not seen before. I think it is one of my favorite videos I have ever been a part of.

What new stories will you be tackling with 'TROPHIES' EP?
I fell in love in 2020, and Trophies talks about the complexities of that process. It covers the joyful and exciting moments of romance, while also navigating the fear of loss and sacrifice. It took me a while to nail down the songs for this body of work, but I am glad I was patient with myself. I always tell my fans that if they want to know what happened to me in the past year, all they have to do is put on the record. My entire story is in this music; I wear my heart on my sleeve through these songs.

Your career had more than one brave turning point where you were willing to share in order to inspire others who might be going through the same thing. How important is it for you to use your platform to raise awareness and help your fans?
I consciously try to avoid thinking of it as a “platform,” rather I just try to be honest to the world and to my fans. I want them to know that, like them, I struggle, I fail, and I go through dark moments. There is a sense of community that I foster with the people who listen to my music and come to my shows, and I always want to be as authentic as possible with them. I will never shy away from difficult topics, and if I feel brave enough to speak out about something, I will not skip a beat in doing so. It’s a good thing for people to understand that just because I have followers and a career in music, it does not mean that I am anything remotely near perfect.

I believe that if we find the way to something we will always know how to go back to it. What is your way to happiness?
Music has always been my guide to happiness. I have had many moments in my career where I wasn’t able to throw all of my attention into the craft, and those are easily marked as my most difficult times as an artist. When my focus is on the art and the music, that is when I am my most happy.

So can we say you’re a happy Hellboy?
I am a happy as f*** Hellboy.

What do you miss the most about life before the pandemic?
I miss touring and being able to see my fans on a nightly basis. They are my lifeline to everything that I know, so being separated from them for over year has been very challenging. I am ready to get back on the road.

Your fashion style has evolved in the last few years! Does fashion give you a different way to express yourself?
It absolutely does. I like telling a story with my clothes, and I am very intentional in what I wear. I try to let my own fashion sense correlate with the message that I am expressing with the music. To me, I view them as an active pair.
